Practical Implications of Teaching Spiritual Care to Health Care Professionals
ABSTRACT:
In 2006, the Mid North Coast Division of General Practice (MNCDGP), New South Wales (Australia), received a grant from the Department of Health and Ageing to increase local health care providers’ levels of understanding and skills in relation to the spiritual care needs of palliative care clients. This practice report details how the focus in the training workshops over the last two years shifted from giving spiritual care to others to exploring the role of spirituality in an individual’s own life. Being aware of and looking after one’s own spiritual needs seems to be essential for enhancing confidence and competency in spiritual care giving.
