The Osteoporosis Project is a small program activity conducted in collaboration with the Coffs Harbour Health Campus (Fracture Clinic) and Coffs Harbour Radiology. The utility of identifying patients with osteofragility fracture has been underscored by international work that attempts to assess absolute risk of future fracture. Not surprisingly, increasing age and deteriorating bone density along with a prior fracture factor highly in such scoring systems.
The Mid North Coast Division of General Practice Osteoporosis Project provided a mechanism whereby a patient’s nominated GP is informed of the fracture and in addition is eligible for DEXA Bone Densitometry at Coffs Harbour Radiology at no personal cost.
The decision as to whether a particular patient should be referred for bone density or be considered for treatment is a matter for the patient and their individual GP.
The project has been suspended due to limited funding and resources avaiable to sustain it.
